Bihar Dalit Vikas Samiti (BDVS)

Empowering Dalit Communities Since 1982

History & Background

Bihar Dalit Vikas Samiti (BDVS) is a community-based organization that began in 1982 as an initiative by the Jesuits of Patna Province. Originally a project under Navjyoti Niketan in Patna, BDVS became an independent registered society in 1994. Its mission was shaped by the Jesuits' reflection on the socio-economic and cultural marginalization of Dalits in Bihar, particularly after India's Emergency period (1975–77).

BDVS works directly with Dalit communities to enhance self-reliance, build community-based organizations, and promote socio-political and economic awareness. Operating across 13 districts of Bihar, BDVS has evolved into a movement empowering Dalits through education, women's leadership, sustainable livelihood, and legal awareness.

Over time, BDVS shifted from a purely welfare-oriented approach to a rights-based, participatory model. This change emphasized community involvement and grassroots leadership. Today, BDVS is a beacon of hope for Dalit communities, especially Musahars, providing support in areas like primary education, child parliament, food security, women empowerment, and disaster response.

BDVS’s journey from a small intervention to a large social movement reflects the commitment of Jesuits and local leaders. Its dedicated work in some of Bihar’s most deprived regions stands as a testimony to sustainable and inclusive development.
