The educational system in India, in the recent past, focuses a lot on English. English medium schools are mushrooming even in the rural surroundings. All want English education, irrespective of their economic back ground. Can we see it is an attempt to assert oneself in the globalized world? If so, why our dalit children should be deprived of this opportunity!
BDVS is making an attempt to respond to this need of the Dalit community. A series of intensive English coaching is being organized for Dalit children at BDVS in Patna. The goal of such initiative is to capacitate our Dalit children with the skills in the use of English language, both in writing and speaking. The second phase of the training was concluded on 17 November 2014. A group of committed teachers accompanied the children all through the 15 days duration of the training and made sure that the children work hard and learn. 34 children actively participated in the training and they were made to believe, No pain! No gain! It was heartening to see the children attempting to speak in their broken English. They even performed short drama in English at the end of the program. It is more significant from the point of view that these children are only the second generation learners from the Dalit community. We are convinced that they are not far away from the mainstream educational system, provided they are given opportunities to learn. They are indeed learning and becoming self confident.
