On 12th June 2019 BDVS organised a program for the students of Mata Savitribai Phule forum who cleared their matriculation with 1st division. The program was held in the administrative office of BDVS, Patna with the association of sister organizations Mithlanchal Dalit Vikas Samiti, Patory and Dalit Mukti Mission, Jhajha.

38 students along with their parents and teachers were invited to the program. The students came from the districts of Barh, Barbigha, Jhajha, Patori and Turki. The primary motive of the program was to congratulate the students who secured the 1st division in their matriculation and to motivate them for their further higher studies.

BDVS had started an educational program way back in 2016 to contribute towards expansion of quality education among focus group. Moving away from the strategy of providing complimentary coaching to lower primary students, we decided to select a group of class 8 students and to support them till they complete their secondary education. We selected nearly 600 students enrolled in class 8 from five districts. From the start, the objective was to motivate and support these selected students to complete their secondary education with good competency.

The selected students were provided with quality complementary coaching, centrally monitored continuous assessment of their academic progress, and motivational classes. The program insisted on full cooperation of the parents and their participation in the program. The participation of the parents in monthly meetings, quarterly parent-teacher meetings, and once a year state level meeting were insisted upon. Regular attendance in the school as well as in the coaching centre, hard work and self study measured by progressive improvements in their academic competency are a few points that the program expected from the selected students.

In the first year, a good number of students had dropped out for one reason or the other. Faulty selection, lack of interest among the parents, irregular attendance both in the school and coaching centre, and some instances of early marriage, etc. had led to discontinuation of over 100 students. From the second year onwards, the number of students in the program was steadier, both the parents and their wards were more proactive and motivated.

Finally, 313 students appeared for their matriculation among them 38 students secured the first division, 113 students secured second division and 106 students secured third division. The program was held to congratulate and motivate them for future.

The students began to arrive at the venue from 10:30 in the morning. The main function began at 11 noon with lighting of the lamp and garlanding of the portraits of Mata Savitribai Phule, the first woman teacher in the country by the Chief guest Aasha Sinha, Danapur Legialature and Fr. Anto, Director of BDVS. This was followed by a devotional dance presented by the two students. Mr Virendra, BDVS staff welcomed the gathering and Mr Sanayi Nayak, the program coordinator of BDVS presented the nature and objective of Mata Savitribai Phule Student Forum.

Students from different districts share their experiences and their journey with Mata savitribai Phule forum.

Mr Naval Bhakt, Mithlanchal Dalit Vikas Samiti, Mahendra Raushan also addressed the gathering and congratulated them for their success.

Aasha Sinha, Chief Guest distributed bag and an oxford dictionary to the three students who ranked highest among them. Fr. Anto Joseph the director of BDVS , Fr Jose Kariyakat assistant director of BDVS and Mr Frank Krishner Media Trainer distributed the bag as the token of gift to the students who secured the 1st division.

Mrs. Sinha, the chief guest said “I am very happy to see you succeeding in your life. But one thing you have to remember it is just the first step. You need to work hard for your future”.

Narrating her own life experience she added, There is no difference between you and the upper cast children. You have to concentrate on your studies. Government is helping you with different schemes and education loan. You have forums like Mata Savitribai Phule which is there with you to help you. You just need to study for your brighter future.”

Fr. Anto Joseph, the director of BDVS expressed his joy in seeing so many students gathering under one inspiration and dream. He congratulated them for their good performance in Matriculation and apprised them. Motivating the students to continue their studies he said, education is the only solution for all the problems. You have set an example for other by securing the 1st division same as Mata Savitribai Phule had done. She is an example for all of us. You have to continue your hard work to be an example in your community and village. He requested them to continue their studies and register themselves as a member of Ambedkar Yuva Munch.
